Dear Mr Maes, As my landlord, you should be aware of this. It’s about my neighbour, Mr DeGree. He’s making a lot of noise. Screams a lot. At night, between midnight and 3 a.m. And he appears to be moving heavy furniture around. Also at night. This makes sleeping in my bedroom impossible. And he’s taken to smoking in the hallway. Cigarette smoke seeps through right into my unit. Revolting. Also, Mr DeGree walks up and down the corridor—all through the night. In between his screaming and furniture rearrangements. He’s heavy. Picture frames in my apartment have shifted due to his roaming. But this is not a note of compliant. I worry about him. In our building we keep to ourselves. But then: when should common decency kick in? Care for others—people living next to you. (Sorry I’m cheesy.) We never even say “hello” as we pass each other in the building. Do I talk to him or let it go? Alternatively: what if I joined him on the floor in the hallway, sat with him, inhaled the cigarette smoke. Smoked myself? A joint? And scream with him afterwards? On the rooftop, bawling to our hearts’ content? Do some voodoo dancing? Later shove his furniture together? Works all the major muscles. Would all this bring peace? Peace to him? Peace to me? Best,
